Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for non-coniferous sawnwood in Argentina expanded from 1 711 thousand m³ in 2018 to 1 958 thousand m³ in 2019. This growth was supported by the ongoing voluntary norms promoting the use of locally grown species in housing construction, and in 2019 by legislative discussions aimed at reducing production costs through advance tax relief for social contributions, which were intended to stimulate domestic consumption.

After peaking in 2019, the market contracted to 1 861 thousand m³ in 2020. Although phytosanitary controls for wood packaging were simplified that year to lower administrative costs for international trade, the overall demand softened. A modest recovery to 1 883 thousand m³ occurred in 2021, coinciding with the introduction of mandatory certification and labeling requirements for wood-based panels and updated structural timber classification standards that facilitated export access. However, in 2022 the market fell sharply to 1 777 thousand m³ as the domestic market closed amid recession, a strong dollar, and low international prices, according to industry reports.

By 2023, the market stabilized at 1 772 thousand m³, while investment trends continued with announcements of expanded sawmilling and board production capacity. In 2024, the opening of the Acon Timber sawmill and pellet plant in Corrientes signaled renewed investment in the forest-industrial sector, alongside increasing EU regulatory pressure that is driving adoption of sustainability certifications.
