This decline reflected a sustained downward trend in the total volume of wood consumed and traded within the country over the six-year period.

Market dynamics were volatile, with a particularly sharp drop of 31% occurring in 2020. A modest recovery followed in 2021, but volume fell again in 2022 before posting an increase in 2023. Despite this recent growth, the market's size in 2023 remained substantially lower than its level in 2018 and 2019.

From 2018 to 2021, China, Germany, and Belgium were the key partners for non-coniferous roundwood exports from the Netherlands, accounting for 34.8%, 20.8%, and 19.6% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 75.1% of total export flows.

In 2019, exports dropped to a minimum of 36 678 K US dollars, with the largest decline of 3.2% recorded that year. By 2020, exports surged by 87.1%, reaching their peak in 2021 at 81 361 K US dollars, which marked a strong increase of 18.6% compared to the prior year. Overall, exports fluctuated by 2.2-fold between the low in 2019 and the high in 2021.
