From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for non-coniferous roundwood in Vietnam grew from 57.9 million m³ to 61.4 million m³. This initial increase was driven by the relocation of wood processing export orders from China to Vietnam, which boosted domestic production. The VPA FLEGT agreement with the European Union, implemented in 2018, established legality standards for timber, influencing sourcing practices.

Market expansion continued into 2021, peaking at 66.3 million m³ as the shift in export orders sustained higher output. From 2022 onward, tighter regulations on timber imports and enhanced origin verification led to a modest correction, with the market volume stabilizing around 65.0–64.0 million m³ in 2022 and 2023.

Throughout the period, domestic demand for furniture remained robust, supported by rising per‑capita incomes and the growth of e‑commerce, providing a steady foundation for wood consumption.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam maintained the 9th position globally in terms of non-coniferous roundwood production volume.

In 2020, Vietnam produced 60 035 K m³ of non-coniferous roundwood, marking a 7.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 14.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5%. The smallest change occurred in 2019, with production remaining essentially flat.

Vietnam's exports of non-coniferous roundwood declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports dropped to 1 K m³, a 67.1% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2018 and 2020, exports fell by 93.4%, translating to an annualized decline of 59.5%.

During 2017-2020, the primary destinations for Vietnam's non-coniferous roundwood exports in volume terms were China (40.9% of exports), India (32.2% of exports), and Asia, not elsewhere specified (15.0% of exports). Together, these three accounted for 88.2% of total export flows.

Vietnam's non-coniferous roundwood exports in value terms also declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 0.2 M $ US, a sharp 54.4% drop from 2019. Over the 2018-2020 period, exports decreased by 93.8%, with a compound annual decline rate of 60.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, China (41.8% of exports in value), India (34.7% of exports in value), and Asia, not elsewhere specified (12.5% of exports in value) consistently served as the main destinations for Vietnam's non-coniferous roundwood exports by value. Combined, they represented 89.0% of total export flows.

Vietnam's imports of non-coniferous roundwood in volume terms fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports reached 1 403 K m³, down 13.5% from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2020, imports decreased by 24.9%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 9.1%.

The import structure for non-coniferous roundwood in volume terms was fragmented from 2017 to 2020. Cameroon (24.4% of imports), Congo (12.9% of imports), and the United States (11.9% of imports) were the top sources, but together they accounted for only 49.3% of total import flows, with no single country dominating.

Vietnam's imports of non-coniferous roundwood in value terms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 381.2 M $ US, a 15.7% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2018 and 2020, imports fell by 28.6%, corresponding to an annualized decline of 10.6%.
