In 2018, European non-coniferous roundwood production reached 242.7 million m³, supported by increased harvesting activity and bark beetle infestations that boosted wood availability. Production then declined to 236.0 million m³ in 2019 and 229.0 million m³ in 2020. However, it rebounded to 242.1 million m³ in 2021, driven by record timber harvests in Germany that totaled 83 million m³, with 11.4 million m³ from broadleaf species.

Production stabilized at 241.6 million m³ in 2022 as overall roundwood output in the EU grew and broadleaf stocks remained steadily available. Market size peaked at 239.4 million m³ that year after rising from 225.6 million m³ in 2020. By 2023, production fell to 232.9 million m³ and market volume dropped to 232.1 million m³. Factors in 2024 pointed to continued pressure, with German timber harvests down 13.3%, leading to roundwood scarcity and price increases, while regulatory uncertainty over EU deforestation-free supply chain rules added further challenges.

Europe's production of non-coniferous roundwood has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, Europe produced 229.0 million cubic meters of non-coniferous roundwood, marking a 2.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 2.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 242.7 million cubic meters, which also saw the largest increase of 3.5%.

The market exhibited significant volatility during these years. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 4,639 thousand cubic meters and peaked in 2020 at 13,238 thousand cubic meters, representing a 2.9-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Europe's exports of non-coniferous roundwood surged by 185.3% compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 29.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, India, and Vietnam were the primary buyers of non-coniferous roundwood from Europe. China accounted for 21.9% of exports in volume, India for 2.2%, and Vietnam for 1.8%. Together, these three countries represented 26.0% of total exports in volume.

Exports in value, M $ US

The value of non-coniferous roundwood exports from Europe has decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1,723 million US dollars, showing a moderate decline of 4.4% compared to 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 2,111 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 24.5%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 14.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the leading destinations for non-coniferous roundwood exports from Europe in value terms were China, Vietnam, and India. China accounted for 33.1% of exports in value, Vietnam for 4.3%, and India for 0.7%. Collectively, these three countries made up 38.1% of total export value.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Import volumes hit their lowest level in 2018 at 580 thousand cubic meters and peaked in 2020 at 9,787 thousand cubic meters, with a 17-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Europe's imports of non-coniferous roundwood increased by 1,508.1% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018, with a drop of 12.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, three main markets—Norway, Brazil, and Switzerland—collectively absorbed 3.1% of total non-coniferous roundwood imports to Europe in volume terms.

Imports of non-coniferous roundwood into Europe have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports were recorded at 1,352 million US dollars, down by 5.5% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 5.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 1,596 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 24.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 10.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the supplier base for non-coniferous roundwood to Europe was diverse. The United States accounted for 2.8% of imports in value terms, Brazil for 1.4%, and Congo for 1.0%. Together, these three countries contributed only 5.2% of total import value, while many other countries held smaller but still notable shares.
