Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, mustard seed production in Southern Asia rose due to the adoption of hybrid varieties and seed treatment technologies, supported by government initiatives such as the Targeted Rice Fallow Area and National Food Security Mission oilseeds programs. These efforts increased yields and expanded cultivation, driving market volume growth from 215.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 236.7 thousand tons in 2020.

A special mustard program during the 2020-21 Rabi season led to further production gains in 2021, while imports surged to 63 thousand tons, more than triple the previous year's level. This caused a sharp 20% expansion in market volume to 284.6 thousand tons. Growth continued in 2022, with the market reaching 300 thousand tons despite lower farm harvest prices, reflecting sustained government support through training and schemes.

In 2023, the market volume contracted to 269 thousand tons as production declined. Industry projections from the Solvent Extractors' Association of India indicated production estimates below government forecasts, while the association launched long-term initiatives like the Model Mustard Farm Project to boost output. By 2024, mustard prices remained below the Minimum Support Price, and sowing area fell due to water shortages, signaling ongoing challenges for domestic supply.
