Edible brassicas production in Eastern Africa has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 3 097 thousand tonnes, marking a modest 5.9% rise from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 23.4%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 7.3%.

Exports edible brassicas from Eastern Africa

Exports in kind, t

Edible brassicas exports from Eastern Africa have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 2 491 tonnes, showing a significant increase of 11.9% compared to the year before. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports surged by 105.7%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Kingdom (accounting for 19.8% of exports in kind), the Netherlands (4.1%), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2.9%) were the largest buyers of edible brassicas from Eastern Africa. However, they were not dominant, as together they represented just 26.7% of total exports, with the rest spread across a wide range of smaller trading partners.

Exports in value, K $ US

After two years of growth, the value of edible brassicas exports from Eastern Africa declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 3 987 thousand US dollars, down by 34.4% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports still increased by 50.7%, with a CAGR of 14.7%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 6 081 thousand US dollars, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 57.3%.

Throughout 2017-2020, the United Kingdom (58.6% of exports in value terms), the Netherlands (15.5%), and the United Arab Emirates (5.7%) formed the key group of partners for edible brassicas exports from Eastern Africa. Together, they accounted for 79.8% of total export value.

Eastern Africa's edible brassicas import volume has declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at approximately 1 626 tonnes, reflecting a 6.1% decrease year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 13.5%, equating to an annualized decline of 4.7%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 1 964 tonnes, with the largest drop occurring in 2019 at 11.8%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 4.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of imports in kind was highly diversified. China (12.0% of imports in kind), South Africa (9.4%), and Egypt (8.7%) together accounted for only 30.1% of total imports. The remaining 69.9% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

Foreign supplies of edible brassicas to Eastern Africa have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 1 832 thousand US dollars, down by 23.0% compared to the prior year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 20.7%, with an annualized rate of decline of 7.4%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 2 478 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase also occurred in 2018 at 7.3%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, South Africa (31.2% of imports in value terms), Egypt (21.6%), and China (14.7%) together absorbed 67.6% of total imports in value terms for edible brassicas to Eastern Africa, making them the main sources.
