The market for fresh mushrooms and truffles in Morocco expanded significantly from 2 505 t in 2018 to 4 090 t in 2023. This growth was initially supported by the development of local mushroom production, including companies like Mushlab that cultivated edible fungi and mycelium. Concurrently, rising consumer interest in fresh mushrooms, with an emphasis on quality and freshness in online and wholesale offerings, boosted demand and imports.

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced supply chain disruptions and higher raw material costs in 2020, temporarily affecting the agricultural sector. However, the market continued to grow as consumption patterns adapted. In 2022, the entry of Spanish producer Setas Meli, which started mushroom production in Morocco complying with national technical standards, added new local capacity. Meanwhile, inflationary pressures from global commodity and energy prices influenced consumer prices and demand.

Market growth slowed to 1.1% in 2023, with the market volume reaching 4 090 t, indicating a period of stabilization after earlier rapid expansion.

Morocco's production of mushrooms and truffles has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 2 190 tonnes, marking a slight increase of 0.9% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production rose by 2.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.8%.

Exports mushrooms and truffles from Morocco

Exports in kind, t

Morocco's exports of mushrooms and truffles have fallen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 33 tonnes, a sharp decline of 67.6% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 96.9%, which translates to an annualized decrease of 68.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and France were the leading markets for Morocco's mushroom and truffle exports by volume. The Netherlands accounted for 40.2% of exports, Saudi Arabia for 16.2%, and France for 14.7%. Together, these three countries represented 71.1% of total export flows.

Morocco's cross-border shipments of mushrooms and truffles in monetary terms have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports were valued at 502 thousand US dollars, a dramatic drop of 51.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 80.7%, with an annualized rate of 42.2%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 2 882 thousand US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 64.2%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 10.9%.
