The molasses market in Mali expanded from 25 002 tonnes in 2018 to 26 028 tonnes in 2020, supported by import substitution policies in the sugar sector which aimed to boost local processing. Despite reported sales difficulties and fraud at the N-Sukala sugar mill in 2019 that required state intervention, overall molasses production held steady.

Market volume declined to 25 648 tonnes in 2021 as persistent operational and contractual issues at N-Sukala, including tax arrears and labor regulation breaches by foreign shareholders, constrained output. A rebound to 25 971 tonnes occurred in 2022 when rising cereal prices indirectly heightened demand for molasses as an alternative animal feed ingredient.

The market contracted to 24 003 tonnes in 2023. In 2024, the government advanced sugar sector development by hosting Brazilian production experts and inaugurating a new sugar plant with a capacity of 104 000 tonnes of sugar annually, which may affect future molasses supply.
