Earlier Report Observations

The molasses market in Australia and New Zealand saw a significant contraction in volume over the period from 2018 to 2023. Market size fell from 1,063 thousand tonnes to 734 thousand tonnes, a drop of over 30%. The most pronounced decrease occurred in 2021, when the market volume plunged to 775 thousand tonnes, marking a sharp departure from the previous years.

This contraction was primarily driven by a substantial increase in exports, which more than tripled from 2019 to reach 265 thousand tonnes in 2021 and remained high thereafter. Simultaneously, domestic production gradually declined from 1,120 thousand tonnes to 995 thousand tonnes, while imports collapsed from 120 thousand tonnes to just a few thousand tonnes annually after 2020. The combined effect of lower local output and significantly higher shipments abroad reduced the volume of molasses available on the domestic market.

By 2022 and 2023, the market stabilized at a new, lower level of around 737-734 thousand tonnes. The data indicates a structural shift where a larger share of locally produced molasses is being directed to international markets, fundamentally reshaping the supply balance within Australia and New Zealand.
