From 2018 to 2023, the Italian molasses market volume fluctuated between 273.0 thousand tons and 334.8 thousand tons, reaching its highest point in 2023. Over this period, domestic production more than halved from 90.0 thousand tons to 55.3 thousand tons, while imports grew steadily from 206.2 thousand tons to 282.6 thousand tons to maintain market supply.

In 2024, molasses imports fell to 229.9 thousand tons. This decline coincided with higher energy costs and geopolitical tensions, which increased sugar prices and disrupted supply chains. At the same time, reduced availability of sugarcane molasses for animal feed, as it was diverted to produce alcohol and disinfectants, further tightened market conditions.

Italy's molasses production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 74.7 K t of molasses, marking a moderate year-over-year decrease of 8.9%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 37.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -14.6%.

Exports molasses from Italy

The market showed significant volatility during these years. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 0.6 K t, then peaked in 2020 at 4.3 K t, representing a sharp 423.8% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, and Hungary were the top destinations for Italy's molasses exports in kind. Bulgaria accounted for 33.1% of exports, the United Kingdom for 32.7%, and Hungary for 20.8%, together making up 86.5% of total export flows.

The market displayed an unstable trend throughout this period. Export values hit their lowest in 2018 at 286 K $ US, then rose to a peak in 2020 at 1 183 K $ US, a 223.6% increase from the year before. The change from trough to peak was a factor of 4.1, with the largest decline of 47.2% occurring in 2018.

Between 2017 and 2020, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the United Kingdom were the main markets for Italy's molasses exports in value terms. Hungary absorbed 29.1% of exports, Bulgaria 27.6%, and the United Kingdom 14.5%, collectively accounting for 71.3% of total export value.

After two years of growth, Italy's molasses import volume declined. In 2020, imports totaled 202.6 K t, showing a modest 9.0% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 2.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.9%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 222.6 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 7.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Egypt, India, and Russia formed the primary cluster for Italy's molasses imports in kind. Egypt contributed 22.7% of imports, India 18.6%, and Russia 17.3%, together representing 58.5% of total import flows.

Italy's molasses import value increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 37 193 K $ US, reflecting a strong 10.1% rise from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 31.4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 9.5%.
