Earlier Report Observations

The molasses market in Gabon contracted from over 8 500 tonnes in 2018 to around 6 150 tonnes in 2022. This decline was linked to the ongoing operational and financial difficulties at the country's sole sugar producer, Sucaf Gabon, which in 2018 reported a 24.5% drop in processed sugar output due to aging equipment and significant losses, directly reducing sugar and molasses production.

Market volume rebounded by 23% to 7 590 tonnes in 2023. This recovery occurred alongside a volatile period for the sugar sector, where a 10% quarterly production increase by the end of the year was noted, though sugar imports also rose to cover deficits. During this time, the government decided to resell its stake in Sucaf Gabon to revitalize the industry.

A major industry shift took place in 2024 when the Turkish group MFB International acquired a 90% share in Sucaf Gabon, renaming it Les Sucreries du Gabon and committing to a modernization investment of at least 11 billion FCFA. The 2024 sugar campaign was not executed, halting local sugar production and leading to a complete reliance on imports, which will influence future molasses supply.
