Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the soybean oilcake market volume in Gabon declined from about 7 000 metric tons to 6 500 metric tons. This decrease was primarily driven by a drop in imports, which aligned with government policies to reduce reliance on food imports. Key initiatives included the establishment of the Gabonese Food Safety Agency (AGASA) to regulate trade and the creation of High Productivity Agricultural Zones (ZAP) to boost local soybean and corn production.

In 2021, the market volume surged to 7 500 metric tons due to a sharp increase in imports. This growth coincided with the Ministry of Agriculture's international collaboration with FAO to enhance post-harvest management and commercialization, as well as active outreach to attract foreign investors like TOYA HOLDING into the agricultural sector. However, in 2022, the market volume fell back to 6 900 metric tons. The launch of the first dedicated soybean and corn agricultural campaign in Woleu-Ntem province, aimed at developing the local value chain, had not yet translated into higher domestic output, while imports contracted.

By 2023, the market volume stabilized at around 6 900 metric tons. Domestic production continued to decline, reaching 3 700 metric tons, but this was offset by a rise in imports to 3 200 metric tons, reflecting the ongoing dependence on foreign supplies despite continued policy support for local agriculture.
