From 2018 to 2020, the molasses market in Congo remained stable at 28 000 t, supported by consistent sugar production from the major player SARIS Congo, which cultivated over 12 000 hectares of sugarcane. However, in 2021, the market volume dropped to 22 106 t after the adoption of the Law on the Freedom of Prices and Competition, which altered the regulatory framework for agricultural markets and commercial practices.

The market then stabilized around 22 100 t in 2022 and 2023. During this period, SARIS Congo began construction of a distillery to process molasses into ethanol, representing a significant investment to diversify the use of this by-product and add value to the local industry.

By 2024, SARIS Congo announced plans to complete the distillery by October 2024, aiming to process 25 000 t of molasses annually into ethanol, while also targeting an increase in sugar production to 80 000 t by 2028, which could influence future molasses supply.
