The Austrian molasses market experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Market volume grew consistently from 81 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 131.3 thousand tons in 2021, supported by rising domestic production and a sharp increase in imports. However, 2022 saw a dramatic contraction to 79 thousand tons, primarily due to a surge in exports which more than tripled compared to the previous year.

A recovery began in 2023, with the market volume rising to 91.1 thousand tons. This rebound coincided with a renewed uptick in demand for organic products, including molasses, during the summer of that year. Concurrently, the introduction of origin checks for corn and soy in the organic feed system strengthened quality controls and regulation, supporting market confidence in the bio segment.

Entering 2024, the organic molasses segment is shaped by growing consumer preference for organic and natural foods, particularly in urban and affluent demographics. Strategic mergers and acquisitions among companies are fostering the integration of innovative technologies and the expansion of distribution networks, which continue to stimulate development within this market segment.

The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 80.0 K t, while the most significant drop occurred in 2018 with a 56.5% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary, Italy, and Slovenia consistently formed the core markets for Austria's molasses exports by volume. Hungary accounted for 44.3% of exports, Italy for 15.7%, and Slovenia for 12.1%. Together, these three countries represented 72.1% of Austria's total molasses export flows during this period.
