Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2021, the Ukrainian market for fresh melons and papayas experienced fluctuations, with market volume rising from 482 thousand tons in 2018 to 503 thousand tons in 2021, after peaking at 546 thousand tons in 2019. The growth in 2021 was partly driven by increased imports, which continued until early May before Sicilian and Italian melons entered the market, affecting seasonality and supply structure.

In 2022, market volume sharply contracted to 314 thousand tons, while production fell by over 45%. Exports ceased entirely, whereas imports surged to 42 thousand tons. By 2023, the market stabilized around 304 thousand tons, showing a minor decline.

For 2024, imports declined to 15.7 thousand tons and exports resumed. The agricultural sector continues to face broader influences including currency fluctuations, energy prices, political conditions, and logistics. Additionally, changes in land market legislation, allowing legal entities to purchase agricultural land from January 1, 2024, are impacting the farming sector, including melon and papaya production.
