Canadian MDF market volume showed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. After reaching a peak of 1 118 thousand m³ in 2019, the market contracted sharply to 916 thousand m³ in 2020, then partially recovered to 1 047 thousand m³ in 2021. However, this recovery was short-lived, as volume fell again to 803 thousand m³ in 2022 and further to 612 thousand m³ in 2023, marking the lowest point in the period.

Market size movements were driven by changes in domestic production, imports, and exports. Production fluctuated from 1 132 thousand m³ in 2018 to a high of 1 334 thousand m³ in 2019, then declined to 959 thousand m³ by 2023. Imports fell from 598 thousand m³ in 2018 to 319 thousand m³ in 2023, while exports remained relatively stable, ranging between 666 thousand m³ and 747 thousand m³ annually. The combined effect of falling production and imports, coupled with steady exports, led to the overall reduction in market volume.

The market's decline accelerated after 2021, with volume dropping by over 20% in both 2022 and 2023. By the end of the period, Canada's MDF market was less than two-thirds of its size in 2018.
