In 2018, the Canadian particle board market volume reached 1 283 thousand m³, supported by steady North American demand for furniture and building applications along with expanding regional production capacity. However, volume contracted to 1 172 thousand m³ in 2019 and fell sharply to 1 033 thousand m³ in 2020. The pandemic-driven supply-demand imbalances in 2020 spiked wood prices by over 200% and constrained local supply, significantly reducing production and market availability.

A rapid recovery followed in 2021, with market volume jumping to 1 361 thousand m³. This rebound was fueled by a 53% price correction after the earlier peak and sustained robust demand from the U.S. residential construction sector, which lifted North American consumption of particle board.

Market volume then eased to 1 347 thousand m³ in 2022 and fell to 1 083 thousand m³ in 2023. Forecasts of weakening demand for particle board, influenced by broader economic conditions, led to the contraction. During this period, lower raw material prices improved production economics, while the introduction of more durable OSB panels began influencing competitive dynamics in the wood-based panel sector.
