After 2021, the market volume contracted to 8.4 million m³ in 2022 before stabilizing at 8.5 million m³ in 2023. This shift coincided with the reorientation of Russian MDF exports from Western to Eastern markets due to geopolitical factors and sanctions, which affected trade flows. The introduction of a reduced railway tariff coefficient for transporting wood products over distances up to 720 km also altered logistics and cost structures, influencing the market's dynamics. In value terms, the market reached a high of $4.4 billion in 2022 before declining to $3.9 billion in 2023 amid changing trade patterns.

Overall, from 2017 to 2020, export values grew by 12.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0%.

MDF import volumes into Eastern Europe (including Northern Asia) increased for the second year in a row. In 2018, imports hit their lowest point at 902 K m³, a 6.9% decline from 2017. In 2019, imports surged by 36.6% to 1 294 K m³, and in 2020, they rose by 5.0% to 1 294 K m³. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volumes grew by 33.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.1%.
