Additionally, geopolitical events such as the sharp decline in malt supplies from Europe to Russia may have redirected trade flows, supporting import growth in Uzbekistan.

Earlier, broader economic factors like China's substantial investments and Uzbekistan's first sovereign credit rating in 2018 helped improve the investment climate, potentially aiding agricultural and industrial development relevant to malt production and consumption.

Uzbekistan's malt production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 26 048 tonnes of malt, marking a 10.3% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 25.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.0%.

According to industry reports, Uzbekistan did not export any malt from 2017 to 2020.

In 2020, Uzbekistan imported 19 445 tonnes of malt, up 15.3% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 21.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 13.2%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, at 21.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Uzbekistan's malt imports in volume terms were dominated by Kazakhstan and Russia, which together made up 87.9% of total imports. Other countries contributed smaller shares.

Imports in value, K $ US

After two years of decline, Uzbekistan's malt imports in value terms rebounded. In 2020, the country imported malt worth 8 573 thousand US dollars, an 11.4% year-on-year increase. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, imports in value terms fell by 13.9%, with an average annual decline of 4.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 7 698 thousand US dollars, and the largest drop was in 2018 at 15.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Germany were the key sources for Uzbekistan's malt imports in value terms. Kazakhstan accounted for 45.4%, Russia for 33.1%, and Germany for 12.6%, together representing 91.1% of total import value.
