Earlier Report Observations
The malt market in Uzbekistan expanded from 41 355 tons in 2018 to 50 923 tons in 2023, despite fluctuations in intermediate years. This growth was partly driven by the country's economic performance, including a 6.5% GDP increase in 2023, which stimulated demand for malt. Imports from Russia remained significant, accounting for about 5% of Russian malt exports in 2023, contributing to market volume.
Regulatory developments also played a role. In 2022, the Eurasian Economic Union introduced a new technical regulation 'On the safety of alcoholic products,' which likely influenced malt quality requirements and demand in Uzbekistan due to trade links. Additionally, geopolitical events such as the sharp decline in malt supplies from Europe to Russia may have redirected trade flows, supporting import growth in Uzbekistan.
Earlier, broader economic factors like China's substantial investments and Uzbekistan's first sovereign credit rating in 2018 helped improve the investment climate, potentially aiding agricultural and industrial development relevant to malt production and consumption.
