Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the malt market in Ecuador was shaped by evolving competition regulations. The Organic Law for the Regulation and Control of Market Power (LORCPM) was already in effect, fostering a competitive environment with numerous small producers and craft breweries. In 2019, the new Commercial Code included provisions to protect national production, coinciding with a rise in domestic output to 49 157 t, though overall market volume edged down to 59 830 t as imports contracted. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to a significant market contraction to 52 667 t, despite regulatory reforms via Executive Decree 1193 to strengthen anti-competitive practice controls.
The market rebounded in 2021 to 65 045 t, supported by Ecuador's economic recovery driven by mining, non-traditional exports, and private consumption. The following year, further amendments to competition regulations under Executive Decree 570 introduced substantial changes to the control of economic concentrations, while the market volume saw a slight dip to 62 066 t.
In 2023, malt market volume surged by over 50% to 95 919 t, primarily due to a sharp increase in imports, which reached 58 118 t.
