Malt market in Belarus

Between 2018 and 2020, the malt market in Belarus experienced significant shifts. The market volume started at 148.4 thousand tons in 2018, a year which saw the registration of a new producer, Maltbay LLC, entering the market. A revised antimonopoly law also came into force, aiming to strengthen competition. In 2019, the market saw a slight reduction to 144.5 thousand tons, a period during which anti-dumping duties on a range of imported goods were introduced. A sharp contraction followed in 2020, with the market volume falling to 80.3 thousand tons.

Market conditions began to change from 2021 onward. After stabilizing at around 80.4 thousand tons in 2021, the domestic malt volume rebounded strongly to 116.9 thousand tons in 2022. This surge was primarily driven by geopolitical tensions and sanctions, which severely reduced export flows to Russia, diverting a larger share of production to the local market. During this period, the major producer, Belgospishcheprom's Belgolod, also expanded its product range by launching granulated malt pellets. Despite a high harvest of brewing barley in 2023 supporting production plans, the market volume receded to 100.9 thousand tons that year, as the company continued to diversify into feed-grade granulated products.

Belarus experienced a decline in malt production for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 158.4 K t of malt, representing a significant 22.0% drop from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 9.5%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 3.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 209.0 K t, with the largest year-on-year increase of 19.4% also occurring that year.

Following two years of growth, Belarus's malt production value declined. In 2020, malt output was valued at 54 822 K $ US, marking a 32.8% decrease compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value dropped by 18.2%, averaging an annual decline of 6.5%. The peak value was reached in 2019 at 81 593 K $ US, while the largest increase of 16.3% was recorded in 2018.

In 2020, Belarus exported 79 664 t of malt, showing a 33.1% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 36.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.8%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when exports fell by 3.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan were the primary buyers of Belarusian malt, accounting for 81.7% of total exports in volume. Russia led with 67.4% of exports, followed by Ukraine at 8.3% and Kazakhstan at 6.0%.

Exports in value, K $ US

Malt exports from Belarus increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export value reached 27 567 K $ US, reflecting a robust 14.6% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, exports grew by 23%, averaging an annual increase of 7.1%.

During 2017–2020, Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan were the main destinations for Belarusian malt in value terms, together comprising 78.6% of total exports. Russia accounted for 63.7% of export value, Ukraine for 8.2%, and Kazakhstan for 6.8%.

The malt import market in Belarus showed volatility from 2017 to 2020. Imports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 1 252 t and peaked in 2020, with a 6.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, imports totaled {value_last_year} t, representing a 26.4% increase from 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2018, when imports fell by 82.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine, Russia, and Germany were the key sources of malt imports to Belarus, together making up 84.1% of total imports in volume. Ukraine led with 53.7%, followed by Russia at 18.9% and Germany at 11.4%.

Belarus's malt import market exhibited noticeable fluctuations between 2017 and 2020. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 802 K $ US, while the peak occurred in 2017, showing a 3.4-fold swing. In 2020, imports amounted to 938 K $ US, a 15.9% increase from 2019. The largest decline was in 2018, with a drop of 70.8%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Ukraine, Russia, and Germany remained the primary sources for malt imports to Belarus in value terms, accounting for 78.6% of total imports. Ukraine contributed 37.2%, Russia 23.3%, and Germany 18.1%.
