Malt market in the Netherlands

The malt market in the Netherlands contracted significantly from 2018 to 2023, with volume dropping from 337 thousand tons to 264 thousand tons. This decline was not steady, however, as the market saw a temporary recovery in 2022 when volume rose to 318 thousand tons before falling again the following year.

Underlying this trend were shifts in domestic production and trade. Local malt output expanded robustly from 264 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 390 thousand tons in 2022, boosting available supply. At the same time, exports grew sharply, rising from 263 thousand tons to over 400 thousand tons by 2021, which drew product away from the domestic market. Imports, meanwhile, were nearly halved from 336 thousand tons in 2018 to 274 thousand tons in 2023, further reducing total available volume within the country.

The combined effect of rising exports and falling imports, despite growing production, led to a smaller domestic market volume over the period. The market's low point in 2023 coincided with a slight dip in production and continued strong export activity.

Malt production in the Netherlands grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 362 thousand tons of malt, marking a significant increase of 24.1% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 42.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 12.4%.

The Netherlands saw its malt export volume expand for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 338.1 thousand tons of malt, up 13.2% from the year before. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 36.9%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 11.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Belgium, and Cambodia were notable but not dominant buyers of Dutch malt, accounting for 16.8%, 12.7%, and 7.1% of exports in volume, respectively. Together, their share reached just 36.6% of total exports.

Malt exports from the Netherlands in value terms rose for the third straight year. In 2020, exports totaled 139.4 million US dollars, a 7.0% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 36.5%, with an average annual rate of 10.9%.

Data from 2017 to 2020 show that malt exports from the Netherlands in value terms were not heavily concentrated on a few key markets. Germany, Belgium, and Cambodia accounted for 15.1%, 11.7%, and 6.9% of exports, respectively, with their combined share making up only 33.8% of total flows.

Imports malt to the Netherlands

The Netherlands experienced a decline in malt import volume for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 266.4 thousand tons, down 9.0% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 20.7%, with an average annual decline of 7.4%. The peak was recorded in 2018 at 335.9 thousand tons, while the largest drop occurred in 2019 with a 12.8% decrease. In 2018, imports showed no change from the previous year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Belgium and France were the dominant sources for malt imports into the Netherlands, together accounting for 90.9% of total volume, with the remainder distributed among smaller markets.

Malt imports into the Netherlands in value terms decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 101.6 million US dollars, a 10.8% drop compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports declined by 17.8%, with an average annual decrease of 6.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 131.4 million US dollars, while the largest decline was in 2019 with a 13.2% fall. In 2018, imports increased by 6.3%.
