Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Greek maize starch market faced pressure from cheap maize imports, primarily from Balkan countries, which undermined the competitiveness of local production. High maize production costs and economic difficulties for growers led to a reduction in maize cultivation areas, as reported during these years, setting a challenging environment for the starch industry.

In 2021 and 2022, interest in maize cultivation increased due to more attractive economic returns compared to other crops. However, international maize price volatility and drought in regions like Kastoria constrained output. The reduction in maize supplies from Ukraine and increased Bulgarian offerings in 2O22 impacted trade flows, contributing to a sharp rise in imports and driving the market size to a peak of 16.6 million USD in 2022. That same year, the Agricultural Cooperative of Volos – EBOL initiated organized maize collection, indicating a strengthening market structure for raw materials.

Following the 2022 peak, the maize starch market size declined to 12.6 million USD in 2023 before a partial recovery to 13.6 million USD in 2024. Domestic starch production continued its downward trend, falling to 1.6 million USD in 2024.
