The Czech malt market expanded from 438.3 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 496.2 thousand tons in 2020. This growth occurred alongside 2018 regulatory changes to domestic and foreign per diem rates and fuel price reimbursements, which affected operational costs for food and beverage companies, including malt producers.

Market volume dropped sharply to 391.5 thousand tons in 2021, then rebounded to 447.7 thousand tons in 2022. Malt production followed a similar pattern, falling to 620.5 thousand tons in 2021 before recovering to 655.3 thousand tons in 2022.

By 2023, the market contracted to 418.6 thousand tons. Entering 2024, new legislative measures took effect, including a higher minimum wage and updated competition rules, while global trends such as rising demand for craft beers and specialty malts began shaping the market landscape.

After two years of growth, malt production in Czechia declined. In 2020, production reached 672 K t, marking a slight decrease of 2.7% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, overall production increased by 5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 691 K t, with the largest year-on-year increase occurring in 2018 at 6.3%.

Exports malt from Czechia

Czechia's malt exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 188.4 K t, representing a significant reduction of 16.5% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 21.6%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -7.8%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2018 at 251.3 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 4.6% that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Czechia's malt exports in volume terms were Poland (35.1% of exports), Germany (15.5%), and Austria (12.5%). Together, these three countries accounted for 63.1% of total export flows.

Foreign malt supplies from Czechia declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, Czechia exported 78.9 M $ US worth of malt, down by 17.1% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 15.7%, equating to an annualized decline of 5.5%. The highest export value was recorded in 2018 at 106.1 M $ US, which also experienced the largest increase of 13.3% that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland (33.3% of exports in value terms), Germany (14.8%), and Austria (12.1%) continued to be the top buyers of malt from Czechia. Collectively, they represented 60.2% of total export value.

Malt imports into Czechia increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 12.5 K t, showing a significant rise of 13.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 35.4%, with an annualized growth rate of 10.6%.
