Maize bran, sharps and residues market in Vietnam

The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Vietnam contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023, falling from 350.9 thousand tons to 206.5 thousand tons. This decline of over 40% was led by a drastic reduction in imports, which plummeted from 150.8 thousand tons to just 0.1 thousand tons in 2022 before a modest recovery.

Domestic production initially expanded, reaching a peak of 238.4 thousand tons in 2020, but then retreated to 199.9 thousand tons in 2022. By 2023, output had partially rebounded to 209.8 thousand tons, cushioning but not reversing the overall market shrinkage caused by the import collapse.

Exports played a secondary role, varying from a high of 26.4 thousand tons in 2020 to a low of 4.1 thousand tons in 2022. The net effect was a much smaller domestic market by the end of the period, with import dependency nearly eliminated compared to 2018.

Maize bran, sharps, and residues production in Vietnam grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, output reached 238.4 K t, marking a slight increase of 2.0% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 23%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 7.2%.

In 2020, the output was valued at 37 367 K $ US, reflecting a modest reduction of 3.3% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 14.1%, equating to an annualized rate of 4.5%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 38 890 K $ US, with the largest increase of 18.7% also occurring that year.

In 2020, foreign supplies of maize bran, sharps, and residues from Vietnam amounted to 4 137 K $ US, corresponding to an uptick of 85.4% compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 19.1%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 92.6%.
