Between 2018 and 2019, the coconut oilcake market in Vietnam saw modest growth, supported by increased investment in technology transfer and R&D contracts within the coconut sector, particularly in Ben Tre province. These developments aimed to create higher-value-added products and helped stimulate domestic production.

The market volume declined in 2020, influenced by the entry into force of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) which increased export opportunities for coconut products, redirecting some supply abroad. Concurrently, ongoing food safety certification requirements under the amended Food Safety Law introduced additional compliance steps for producers.

From 2021, the adoption of cold-press technology and the commissioning of new processing plants in regions like Ben Tre and Vinh Long expanded production capacity, supporting market recovery. By 2023, however, a shortage of domestic coconut raw material—driven by strong fresh coconut exports to China—constrained local factory utilization and led to a significant rise in imports to meet sustained demand.

Vietnam's coconut oilcake production saw a two-year rise before declining. In 2020, production reached 96 623 tonnes, marking a slight 1.4% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 4.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.5%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 98 002 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 4.9%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2018 at 2 193 tonnes and peaked in 2020 at 6 951 tonnes, representing a 3.2-fold difference. In 2020, shipments increased by 78.5% compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 43.2%.

Coconut oilcake exports from Vietnam rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 1 507 thousand US dollars, a 54.0% increase from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 59.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 16.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 923 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 2.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Japan, and Asia (not elsewhere specified) accounted for the largest shares of Vietnam's coconut oilcake exports by value. India represented 38.0%, Japan 13.7%, and Asia 10.9%, together comprising 62.7% of total export flows.

After a two-year increase, coconut oilcake imports into Vietnam declined. In 2020, import volume totaled 15 359 tonnes, a 33.3% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 28.7%, with an average annual decline of 10.7%. The highest import level was recorded in 2019 at 23 043 tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 6.7%.
