Earlier Report Observations
The Vietnamese market for bran, sharps and residues from cereal and legume processing contracted in physical volume from 4.3 million tons in 2018 to 3.5 million tons in 2023. This decline was driven by a sustained reduction in imports, which fell from 852 thousand tons to 497 thousand tons, and a concurrent expansion of exports, which grew from 171 thousand tons to 543 thousand tons over the same period. The market value exhibited greater volatility, dropping to $748 million in 2020 before recovering to $1.01 billion by 2023.
Domestic production volume remained relatively stable, hovering between 3.5 and 3.6 million tons annually. The value of production, however, followed a similar volatile pattern as the total market, reaching a low of $694 million in 2020 before rising to $1.05 billion in 2023. The shifting balance of trade, with exports rising to absorb more domestic output and imports providing less supplementary supply, was the dominant dynamic reshaping the market's overall size during these years.
