Earlier Report Observations

The market for maize bran and residues in the Netherlands experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. Volume surged from 197.9 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 247.8 thousand tons in 2020, primarily driven by a more than threefold increase in imports, which rose from 14.4 to 63.7 thousand tons over those two years. This expansion was followed by a contraction, with the market size falling to 235.2 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 204.1 thousand tons in 2022 as import volumes halved.

Domestic production showed relative stability, fluctuating within a band of approximately 175 to 190 thousand tons annually throughout the period. A notable shift occurred from 2022, when exports began to rise substantially from previously minimal levels, reaching 11.9 thousand tons in 2023. This growing export activity applied additional downward pressure on the total domestic market volume during the latter part of the period.

The market stabilized at 209.0 thousand tons in 2023. Preliminary external trade data indicates import volumes for 2024 and 2025 remain elevated compared to pre-2020 levels, while exports have moderated from their 2023 high.
