Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2019, the market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Southern Asia was shaped by state-backed agricultural research and subsidies aimed at improving maize cultivation. The entry of new private processors and the commissioning of modern milling facilities increased value addition, while a reduction of the GST rate to 5% for these products enhanced market access. Against this backdrop of sector development, the market volume saw a slight contraction from 1 184 thousand tonnes to 1 152 thousand tonnes, indicating a period of stabilization.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused severe supply chain disruptions, leading to a sharp decline in market volume to 886 thousand tonnes. State-owned enterprises increased investments in processing to stabilize supplies. A recovery began in 2021, with volume rising to 921 thousand tonnes, supported by the launch of large-scale processing plants and the entry of new players focused on pelletized feed production, alongside continued government initiatives promoting sustainable residue use.
In 2022, market volume experienced a minor decrease to 901 thousand tonnes, coinciding with ongoing global supply chain disruptions and commodity price volatility. During this period, the expansion of state-owned research and processing infrastructure continued, and policy shifts encouraged the export of maize residues to regional markets. By 2023, the market rebounded strongly to 1 140 thousand tonnes, returning to pre-pandemic levels and underscoring the sector's resilience.
