Maize bran, sharps and residues market in Uganda

The domestic market for maize bran and residues started at 166 тыс. т in 2018. It contracted to 131 тыс. т the following year, as increased exports to neighboring Kenya reduced local availability. A rebound to 175 тыс. т occurred in 2020, supported by wider adoption of chemical weed control that raised maize yields and boosted by-product generation.

Growth continued over the next two years, reaching 256 тыс. т by 2022. This expansion was fueled by the promotion of drought-tolerant maize varieties that improved crop resilience and harvests, alongside a sustained push for value addition through community milling, which raised the output of bran as a processing residue.

In 2023, the market volume retreated to 208 тыс. т, reflecting a combination of lower maize production and heightened export shipments.

In 2020, Uganda produced 187.0 K t of maize bran, sharps, and residues, marking a significant increase of 24.4% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 30.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 13.2%.

The market showed an unstable trend during this period. Exports peaked in 2017 and fell to their lowest point in 2018, with a 4.6-fold difference between these years. In 2020, deliveries of maize bran, sharps, and residues from Uganda totaled 12 000 t, indicating a year-on-year decrease of 39.8%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 6 788 t. The largest decline was in 2018 at 78.3%, while the largest increase occurred in 2019 at 193.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kenya almost entirely determined the geographical structure of Uganda's exports in kind of maize bran, sharps, and residues, accounting for 99.6% of total flows.

Volatility characterized the market behavior during these years. Exports peaked in 2017 and hit their trough in 2018, with a 4.4-fold gap between these points. In 2020, Uganda's export volume of maize bran, sharps, and residues was recorded at 2 560 K $ US, down by 29.3% compared to the previous year. The minimum value was in 2018 at 942 K $ US. The largest decline was in 2018 at 77.4%, while the largest increase was in 2019 at 284.4%.

The market showed signs of volatility over the observed period. Imports reached their highest volume in 2019 and their lowest in 2018, reflecting a 5.5-fold gap. In 2020, Uganda's imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues registered 59 t, reflecting a sharp decrease of 78.6% compared to the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 50 t, while the maximum was in 2019 at 275 t. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 448.4%.

In 2020, Uganda's import volume of maize bran, sharps, and residues came to 12 K $ US, down by 73.5% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 45 K $ US. The largest increase was in 2019 at 147.5%.
