The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Southern Europe showed significant fluctuations from 2018 to 2023. Volume started at 757.7 thousand tons in 2018, dipped to 715.0 thousand tons in 2019, and then contracted sharply to 440.3 thousand tons in 2020. A recovery followed, with the market growing to 496.0 thousand tons in 2021 and surging to 726.3 thousand tons in 2022, before easing to 634.3 thousand tons in 2023.

Production volumes mirrored this volatility, falling from 688.7 thousand tons in 2018 to a low of 393.9 thousand tons in 2020, then rebounding strongly to 714.0 thousand tons in 2022. Imports generally trended downward from 91.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 56.2 thousand tons in 2022, but rose sharply to 95.9 thousand tons in 2023. Exports expanded steadily from 22.3 thousand tons in 2018 to 45.3 thousand tons in 2023.

Globally, maize bran consumption grew steadily, reaching 26 million tons in 2024 with an average annual increase of 1.9% since 2013, while import prices peaked at $299 per ton in 2022 before moderating. These international trends provide context for the Southern European market's integration into wider trade dynamics.

The market showed an unstable trend over the period. Production reached its lowest point in 2017, then peaked in 2018 with a 2-fold increase. In 2020, Southern Europe produced 393.9 K t of maize bran, sharps and residues, marking a sharp 40.0% decrease from 2019. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 688.7 K t, which represented the largest annual increase of 104.3%.

Southern Europe's exports of maize bran, sharps and residues grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 28 556 t, up 23.2% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 3.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.2%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 22 328 t, which saw the largest decline of 19.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey (5.5% of exports in kind), Japan (1.7%), and Jordan (1.3%) were among the top buyers of maize bran, sharps and residues from Southern Europe. However, their combined share was just 8.5% of total exports, indicating a highly diversified partner base.

Southern Europe's exports of maize bran, sharps and residues in value terms rose to 8 780 K $ US in 2020, a 44.4% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 29.2%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 8.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 6 080 K $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 18.1%.

During 2017-2020, Panama (7.9% of exports in value terms), Turkey (4.4%), and France (3.4%) were significant buyers of maize bran, sharps and residues from Southern Europe. Together, they accounted for only 15.8% of total exports, with the remaining 84.2% spread across numerous other partners.

Imports of maize bran, sharps and residues into Southern Europe fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 74 966 t, down 8.8% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 17.6%, with a compound annual decline rate of 6.2%. The highest import volume was in 2018 at 91 381 t, which saw the largest increase of 0.4%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 10.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, imports in kind of maize bran, sharps and residues to Southern Europe were relatively dispersed. France (23.6% of imports in kind), Hungary (9.5%), and Bulgaria (8.7%) together accounted for only 41.9% of total imports.

The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 24 221 K $ US, which saw the largest increase of 14.1%.
