The market volume for linseed oil-cake in Southern Europe experienced notable shifts between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 52 873 t in 2018, it dipped to 49 355 t the following year. However, this expansion was short-lived, as the market contracted sharply to 51 524 t in 2022 and further to 43 811 t in 2023.

This volatility was largely driven by changes in imports, which jumped from 29 214 t in 2020 to 49 159 t in 2021 before collapsing to 22 661 t in 2022. Domestic production remained relatively stable over the period, ranging between 24 432 t and 32 555 t, without matching the import swings. Overall, the market lost nearly 17% of its volume between 2018 and 2023, with the most dramatic drop occurring after 2021.

The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 32,555 tonnes, which represented a 37.5% increase from the prior year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest decline of 14.1%.

Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 301 tonnes, then peaked in 2019 at 540 tonnes, creating a 1.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, cross-border shipments of linseed oil-cake from Southern Europe totaled 454 tonnes, a 15.9% decrease from 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 33.5% drop, while the largest increase was recorded in 2019 with a 79.4% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany accounted for 57.8% of exports in kind, followed by the Netherlands at 14.5% and Austria at 11.5%. Together, these three countries represented 83.8% of total export flows.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. Export values hit their lowest point in 2018 at 201,000 US dollars, then reached their peak in 2019 at 490,000 US dollars, resulting in a 2.4-fold variation between these years. In 2020, linseed oil-cake exports from Southern Europe totaled 430,000 US dollars, representing a significant 12.3% reduction compared to the previous year. The largest decline of 35.1% occurred in 2018, while the largest increase of 143.4% was recorded in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Kazakhstan led as the top supplier with 33.3% of imports in kind, followed by Germany at 14.8% and Ukraine at 12.6%. Together, these three countries accounted for 60.7% of total imports in kind.
