The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in South-eastern Asia grew from 2 360 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 2 541 thousand tons in 2019, before contracting sharply to 1 440 thousand tons in 2020. The decline continued to 1 124 thousand tons in 2021, then stabilized around 1 064-1 107 thousand tons through 2023.

Regional trade flows, including exports from Lao PDR to Thailand noted in 2018, supported market activity during the initial growth phase. By 2024, global maize bran consumption had increased, aligning with a rise in regional imports to 304 thousand tons, indicating influence from broader demand trends.

Production volumes fell from over 2 400 thousand tons in 2019 to approximately 1 140 thousand tons in 2023, while exports from the region grew steadily from 41 thousand tons to 138 thousand tons over the same period, reflecting a shift in supply patterns.

After two years of growth, maize bran, sharps, and residues production in South-eastern Asia declined. In 2019, production reached its peak at 2 406 K t, but by 2020 it had fallen to 1 244 K t, representing a 48.3% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production dropped by 34.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 13.0%. The largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 13.2%.

In 2019, exports peaked at 58.0 K t, but by 2020 they had decreased to 51.3 K t, an 11.5% drop from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports overall increased by 86.9%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 23.2%. The largest year-on-year increase was recorded in 2018, when exports surged by 47.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, South Korea, and Germany were the key destinations for exports in kind of maize bran, sharps, and residues from South-eastern Asia. Japan accounted for 42.7% of exports in kind, South Korea for 1.4%, and Germany for 0.9%, together representing 45.1% of total export flows.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports in value terms grew by 159.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 37.5%.

The maximum import volume was recorded in 2018 at 258.4 K t, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, when imports surged by 205.4%.
