The market for legume bran, sharps and residues in South-eastern Asia expanded rapidly from 2018 to 2022, with total volume growing from 55.8 thousand tons to 158.4 thousand tons. This growth was driven by a sharp rise in imports, which increased more than fourfold over the period, while domestic production showed moderate fluctuations.

After reaching a peak in 2022, the market volume contracted to 136.2 thousand tons in 2023. The decline was accompanied by a reduction in both import volumes and domestic output, though the market remained substantially larger than its 2018 level.

After two years of decline, production of legume bran, sharps, and residues in South-eastern Asia increased. In 2020, the region produced 20,051 tonnes, marking a modest 1.0% gain from the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 31.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 12.0%. The lowest point was in 2019, with 19,854 tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018, at 25.3%.

The market showed significant fluctuations during this period. Imports varied dramatically, with a 19-fold difference between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2019. In 2020, South-eastern Asia exported 1,938 tonnes of legume bran, sharps, and residues, a staggering 1,763.5% increase from 2019. The minimum export volume was recorded in 2019 at 104 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 76.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, Pakistan, and China were the key export partners for legume bran, sharps, and residues in kind. Japan accounted for 25.1% of exports, Pakistan for 4.5%, and China for 0.7%, together making up 30.3% of total export flows.

The minimum value was 251 thousand US dollars in 2019, which also experienced the largest decline of 9.3%.
