Maize bran, sharps and residues market in Mozambique

The market volume for maize bran, sharps and residues in Mozambique rose from 109 thousand tons in 2018 to 190 thousand tons in 2022. This expansion was underpinned by sustained investments in improved, drought-tolerant maize seeds since 2018, which increased maize production and the availability of milling by-products. The use of bran for animal feed further integrated this residue into the local production chain. Government-led seed distribution programs to thousands of farmers, particularly by 2022, provided additional support for higher maize yields.

In 2023, market volume contracted to 182 thousand tons. This decline was primarily caused by adverse climatic conditions, including erratic rainfall that led to increased pest infestations such as fall armyworm, reducing maize harvests and consequently the supply of bran and residues.

Mozambique's production of maize bran, sharps, and residues has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 154.1 thousand tons, marking a significant 16.3% increase from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 44.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 13.1%.

The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 4 535 tons, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018 with a 27.5% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, South Africa was the dominant destination for Mozambique's exports of maize bran, sharps, and residues, accounting for 86.0% of total shipments. The remaining 14.0% was distributed among various smaller markets.
