Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, production of bran, sharps and residues from cereal processing in Mozambique rose from 277 thousand tons to 358 thousand tons, while the domestic market size expanded from 272 thousand tons to 333 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by the government's Operational Plan for Cereal Commercialization (POCOCE) and the Five-Year Government Program, which focused on promoting market-oriented agricultural trade and ensuring full absorption of cereal production in domestic and external markets.
In 2022, the market faced global supply chain disruptions due to the war in Ukraine, which increased world cereal prices. The Cereals Institute of Mozambique (ICM) was highlighted as a key agent to stimulate production. Output stabilized at 352 thousand tons, and the market size remained steady at 333 thousand tons. The following year, extreme weather events, including El Niño, floods and cyclones, reduced cereal production in the country, causing a slight dip in processing residues to 348 thousand tons. A sharp rise in exports to 126 thousand tons in 2023, however, cut the domestic market to 223 thousand tons. The government instructed the ICM to build strategic cereal reserves to ensure food security and price stability.
