The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Sri Lanka shrank considerably from 16 804 t in 2018 to 8 645 t in 2022, a decline of over 48%. The contraction was most severe in 2021, when volume dropped by 5 566 t in a single year.
Domestic production fell from 16 804 t in 2018 to 7 600 t in 2022, while imports entered the market from 2019 onward and varied between 293 t and 1 045 t. The overall market volume closely followed the production trend throughout the period.
A partial recovery occurred in 2023, with production rising to 9 920 t and the total market volume growing to 10 364 t, a 20% increase from the previous year. Despite this rebound, the market remained well below its 2018 peak.
