Earlier Report Observations

The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Kenya experienced a multi-year decline from 205 thousand tons in 2018 to 167 thousand tons in 2022. This contraction occurred against a backdrop of persistent challenges in primary maize production, notably the shrinking of agricultural land due to urbanization and subdivision, which limited the raw material supply for milling. Government initiatives, such as input subsidies for seeds and fertilizers and the promotion of biological pest control, were ongoing efforts to support maize yields but were insufficient to reverse the overall downtrend.

A significant shift began in 2022 when the Kenya Bureau of Standards banned 17 maize flour brands and suspended the licenses of five millers over quality standards, directly affecting processing activity. This regulatory enforcement coincided with a major 38.8% increase in national maize production. The market volume subsequently recovered to 172 thousand tons in 2023, driven by this improved harvest and supported by evolving industry trends, including a consumer preference shift towards fortified maize flour products, as outlined in the government's Agricultural Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy.
