From 2018 to 2020, the market volume of maize bran, sharps and residues in Côte d'Ivoire expanded from 30 372 t to 40 390 t, a 33% increase. This growth was underpinned by strong domestic maize production, which averages about 600 000 t annually and is largely oriented toward local consumption, with imports not exceeding 5% of national demand. The maize cultivation system in the north, linked to cotton farming, and the adoption of high-yield varieties provided a steady supply of raw material for processing.

After stabilizing near 40 466 t in 2021, the market rose again to 49 020 t in 2022. A 77.78% surge in maize prices between 2018 and 2021 elevated production costs but also incentivized greater output. In 2022, the government enacted a decree mandating prior authorization for foodstuff exports, strengthening control over external shipments.

In 2023, market volume declined to 38 910 t, down 21% from the previous year. This contraction coincided with heightened pressure on food supplies due to the influx of over 1.5 million visitors for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside preparations for the export suspension on foodstuffs announced in early 2024 to ensure national food security.

Côte d'Ivoire's production of maize bran, sharps and residues has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 40 600 tonnes, marking a 30.5% rise from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 31.2%, which translates to an average annual increase of 9.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 30 411 tonnes, with the largest decline that year being 1.8%.

Market performance showed significant fluctuations during this period. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 39.5 tonnes, while the highest occurred in 2020 at 209.7 tonnes, representing a 5.3-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports from Côte d'Ivoire rose by 58.2% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was in 2018 at 60.8%, while the biggest increase was in 2019 at 235.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Côte d'Ivoire's maize bran, sharps and residues exports were Niger (40.5% of exports), Liberia (37.7%), and Burkina Faso (15.0%). Together, these three countries accounted for 93.2% of total export flows.
