The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in the Democratic Republic of the Congo showed volatility from 2018 to 2022. After a dip to 83,453 tonnes in 2019, market volume steadily recovered, reaching 87,542 tonnes by 2022.

Production fell sharply by 8% to 80,382 tonnes in 2023. This decline occurred alongside a maize crisis in Haut-Katanga province, where maize flour prices halved, leading to government intervention for sector inspection and support. Authorities also removed a 'toxic' fiscal burden on maize imports to address shortages in the Katanga and Kasaï regions.

In 2024, the government initiated a large-scale agricultural campaign targeting 250,000 hectares of cultivation with nationwide seed distribution and announced a policy for agricultural mechanization. It also enacted 24 fiscal measures, including the elimination of all duties and taxes on maize and maize flour, aiming to stabilize prices and support the sector.

After two consecutive years of decline, maize bran, sharps, and residues production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rebounded in 2020. That year, the country produced 84 409 tonnes, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 6.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 82 503 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual decline of 5.0%.
