Looking at the 2017-2020 period, production declined by 3.3%, with an average annual decrease of 1.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 782 thousand tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 866 thousand tonnes. The most significant drop happened in 2019, when production fell by 9.7%.

In 2020, the output was valued at 189.8 million US dollars, representing a modest 2.6% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value dropped by 13.2%, with an average annual decline of 4.6%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 228.0 million US dollars. The most substantial decrease occurred in 2019 with a 14.5% drop, while the largest increase was seen in 2018 with a 4.2% rise.

Maize bran, sharps and residues exports from Western Europe increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region exported 272.6 thousand tonnes, showing a sharp 25.3% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 32.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.8%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 190.9 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 7.2% that year.

During the 2017-2020 period, Spain, Norway, and Italy were the main destinations for maize bran, sharps and residues exports from Western Europe. Spain accounted for 13.2% of exports in kind, Norway for 1.2%, and Italy for 1.0%. Together, these three countries represented 15.3% of total exports in kind.

Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 18.9%, with an average annual increase of 5.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 50 248 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 4.1% that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the partner landscape for exports in value terms was quite diverse. Spain accounted for 9.0% of exports in value terms, Norway for 1.1%, and Italy for 0.9%. Together, these three countries represented only 11.0% of total export flows, while the remaining 89.0% was distributed among many other countries.
