Locust bean production in Africa showed modest growth from 25 996 t in 2018 to 26 646 t in 2019, then stabilized around 26 584 t in 2020 and 2021. The market has long been dominated by traditional artisanal processing, primarily carried out by women, with strong local consumption for culinary and medicinal uses supporting steady output.

From 2022, production began to rise again, reaching 26 772 t and then 26 854 t in 2023. This gradual increase coincided with the emergence of a global market for locust bean extract, driven by demand for natural ingredients in the food industry, which indirectly boosted demand for raw beans. Rising prices in key markets like Nigeria and Kenya reflected growing demand, while initiatives to modernize processing aimed to improve productivity. By 2024, the African locust bean market was influenced by increasing demand for natural and fermented products, with expanding use of extracts as thickeners and stabilizers in the global food industry.

In Africa, locust bean production reached 26,584 tonnes in 2020, showing no change from the previous year. Looking back, the lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 25,996 tonnes. That year also saw the largest decline in output, with a drop of 4.1%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant increase, with production rising by 2.5%.
