Between 2018 and 2022, the locust bean market in Ukraine expanded consistently, with total volume rising from 279 100 to 333 300 metric tons. This growth was entirely due to increasing imports, which more than doubled from 79 500 to 137 600 metric tons over the period, while domestic production remained stable at around 194 000 to 199 700 metric tons.

In 2023, the market contracted sharply to 219 600 metric tons, a drop of 113 700 metric tons from the previous year. The decline was caused by a sudden fall in imports to just 22 100 metric tons, even though local production edged up slightly to 197 700 metric tons.

Ukraine's locust bean production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 192.4 t, marking a slight decrease of 0.8% compared to 2019. The largest drop occurred in 2019, with a 2.9% reduction. Production peaked in 2018 at 199.7 t, which represented a 2.1% increase from the previous year.

Ukraine's locust bean imports rose for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports reached approximately 100.8 t, showing a modest increase of 7.4% from 2019. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 79.5 t, which saw a significant decline of 24.4%. Imports then rebounded in 2019 with an 18.1% rise. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 4.1%, averaging an annual decline of 1.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain consistently supplied 87.5% of Ukraine's locust bean imports by volume, highlighting a strong reliance on this market, while the remaining share was distributed among other countries.
