Earlier Report Observations
The market for fresh tomatoes in Cyprus reached 17 130 t in 2019 after starting at 16 692 t in 2018, but then contracted sharply to 13 933 t in 2020.
A recovery brought the market volume to 16 653 t in 2021. It then stabilized around 16 300-16 600 t through 2022 and 2023. Amendments to the Protection of Competition Law in 2022 fostered fairer competition in the agricultural sector, aiding market steadiness. From May 2023, the introduction of a zero VAT rate on fresh tomatoes reduced consumer costs, helping to maintain demand amidst broader economic pressures.
Into 2024, import volumes grew significantly, reflecting ongoing market activity supported by the extension of the zero VAT measure until late 2025 and proposed regulatory changes to public market management.
