Earlier Report Observations

The market for leguminous vegetables in the CIS expanded from 192.9 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 249.5 thousand tonnes in 2021. This growth was driven by state-owned companies and large agri-holdings investing in production capacity expansion and modernization, alongside policies promoting import substitution. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further accelerated demand as consumers prioritized healthier diets, while new labeling and traceability standards enhanced market transparency.

After reaching a peak in 2021, the market volume contracted to 240.2 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 234.0 thousand tonnes in 2023. Sanctions and logistical constraints introduced significant challenges, even as state support for domestic producers continued through new legislative initiatives and investment in greenhouse complexes. The period also saw the emergence of organic and vacuum-packed vegetable segments, reflecting shifting consumer preferences.
