Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for lard stearin, lard oil, oleostearin, oleo-oil and tallow oil in the CIS showed variability from 2018 to 2021, beginning at 437.6 tons, dipping to 407.5 tons in 2019, and then recovering to reach a high of 464.2 tons in 2021. This period coincided with a significant rise in import volumes, which increased from 8.4 tons to 51.0 tons.

A turning point occurred in 2022 when the market contracted to 411.9 tons. This decline aligned with the introduction of a ban on imports of these products, effective from January 1, 2022, which required veterinary certificates and approval from the Ministry of Agriculture, thereby restricting inbound supply. The regulatory environment was further shaped by the Eurasian Economic Commission's 2021 decision establishing a unified commodity nomenclature and customs tariff for the Eurasian Economic Union, which standardized the classification and duties for these goods.

Market volume continued to decrease in 2023, falling to 392.6 tons. The ongoing import ban contributed to a sharp drop in imports to just 5.2 tons, while domestic production saw a slight recovery to 392.3 tons, indicating that the restrictive measures continued to influence the overall supply and consumption levels.
