Between 2018 and 2023, the kiwifruit market in India expanded from 52 320 t to 66 653 t, driven by concerted state-led efforts to develop domestic cultivation. Key northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim became focal points, with government initiatives from the Central Institute of Horticulture and the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture providing training, improving planting material, and standardizing packaging to support farmers. The establishment of the Kiwi Research Institute in Arunachal Pradesh in 2023 acted as a catalyst, aiming to boost organic production and value addition.

Market volume saw a significant surge to 83 086 t in 2021, coinciding with the growing adoption of scientific package of practices for organic kiwifruit farming in Sikkim, which enhanced product quality and profitability. A correction followed in 2022, bringing the market to 61 642 t, before growth resumed in 2023 to 66 653 t, supported by the new research infrastructure and continued state-owned initiatives empowering farmers and opening new market opportunities.

The development was set against a backdrop of persistent challenges in cold storage and processing infrastructure, as well as evolving consumer preferences for fresh, local, and nutrient-rich fruits. By 2024, new food safety and labeling regulations from FSSAI came into effect, emphasizing transparency and consumer protection, which set the stage for further changes in packaging and marketing compliance for kiwifruit.

Kiwifruit production in India grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, India produced 13 781 tonnes of kiwifruit, a 10.0% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 14.9%, averaging an annual growth rate of 4.7%.

Exports kiwifruit from India

Exports in kind, t

India's kiwifruit exports expanded for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 63 tonnes, surging by 53.0% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports soared by 18 106.9%, translating to an average annual increase of 466.8%.

During 2017-2020, Nepal accounted for 71.3% of India's total kiwifruit exports by volume, with the remainder distributed among various smaller markets.

India's kiwifruit imports continued to rise for the third straight year. In 2020, imports totaled 46 913 tonnes, up 8.6% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, imports grew by 73%, with an average annual rate of 20.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Iran (40.2% of import volume), Chile (21.8%), and New Zealand (16.5%) were the leading suppliers of kiwifruit to India, together making up 78.4% of total imports by volume.

India imported approximately 53 517 000 US dollars worth of kiwifruit in 2020, a 16.2% increase from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, import value rose by 55.9%, averaging 16.0% per year. The largest annual decline was 8.7% in 2019, while the biggest increase was 47.0% in 2018.
