Serbia's in-shell hazelnut market volume fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 5 427 t and reaching 8 245 t in 2023. The overall increase in domestic production was supported by a multi-year expansion of hazelnut plantations and the adoption of modern drying and storage techniques, which began in 2018 to preserve nut quality and reduce losses. Growing consumer interest in hazelnuts as a healthy and nutritious food item further bolstered domestic demand from 2020 onward.

New players entered the market in 2021, supported by EU-funded subsidies for sorting and processing machinery, which enhanced product quality and competitiveness. Concurrent regulatory changes, including producer registration rules and updated labeling requirements, helped standardize the market. These developments, alongside the continued planting of high-yield varieties developed through cooperation with scientific institutions, laid the groundwork for a significant production jump to 9 328 t in 2022.

Production rose further to 10 190 t in 2023. However, the domestic market volume that year declined to 8 245 t as a substantial portion of output was directed to exports, which grew sharply from 2021. Technological innovations introduced earlier, such as edible coatings to extend shelf life, and sustained demand for organic products continued to support the sector's advanced processing capabilities and product quality.

In 2020, Serbia produced 6 689 tonnes of in-shell hazelnuts, marking a sharp year-on-year increase of 35.2%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 59.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.8%. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, when production fell by 8.8%.

In 2020, Serbia's in-shell hazelnut exports reached 212 kg, representing a dramatic 165.0% increase compared to 2019. The most substantial decline was recorded in 2019, when exports dropped by 94.7%.
