From 2018 to 2020, in-shell hazelnut production in Belarus remained stable, peaking at 1,286 t in 2020. This period coincided with the establishment of the first commercial hazelnut plantation of 75 hectares in 2018 and the expansion of total planting area to over 700 hectares by 2020. The crop gained recognition as a promising agricultural venture, supporting output volumes.

Market volume began to contract from 2021, falling from 1,312 t to 1,184 t by 2023, while production declined to 1,221 t. This downward trend aligned with a shift in consumer preference toward shelled hazelnuts due to convenience, which reduced demand for in-shell nuts. By 2023, the industry identified a need for primary processing facilities to meet market requirements.

Despite the market contraction, hazelnut cultivation continued to develop with the adaptation of European varieties like Barcelona and Catalan, and improved agronomic practices such as mechanical weeding. However, the persistent consumer preference for shelled nuts remained a defining factor for the in-shell segment.
