Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Croatian in-shell hazelnut market volume more than doubled, reaching 3 067 t. This growth was propelled by state and EU subsidies for investments in permanent hazelnut orchards and farm modernization, with the state-owned company PP Orahovica significantly expanding its plantations and processing capacity. A concurrent rise in consumer demand for domestic and organically certified hazelnuts, further accelerated by a pandemic-driven shift towards healthier eating, supported the market expansion.

The market volume sharply contracted to 1 557 t in 2021, before recovering to 2 415 t in 2022. The 2022 rebound was driven by continued production increases from PP Orahovica and sustained consumer preference for local, healthy snacks in the post-COVID period. In 2023, volume declined to 1 990 t as a global production shortfall in Turkey, the world's dominant producer, affected international supply and pricing, while Croatian growers focused on plans to enhance future orchard capacity and organic certification.
